Description

This World War II-era Grumman/General Motors TBM-3E Avenger torpedo bomber was lent to the Intrepid Sea, Air and Space Museum in New York City by the National Museum of Naval Aviation in Pensacola, Florida, and is displayed on the hangar deck with its wings folded and a U.S. Navy Mk.13 torpedo under the plane.  U.S. Navy aircraft carrier USS Intrepid (CV-11) could carry almost a hundred planes including Avenger bombers, which helped sink the giant Japanese battleship HIJMS Musashi at the Battle of Leyte Gulf.  The Intrepid's aircraft spotted Admiral Kurita's fleet and launched the first attack, and Avenger bombers scored several hits on the Musashi, which fired sanshikidan "beehive" anti-aircraft shells from its 46cm guns.  Some of the Avengers were shot down, but they and the dive bombers sank the battleship and prevented the Japanese from holding the Philippines against the Allies.

Very different angle on 'The Turkey,' a truly great aircraft that more than lived up to her other name.
